S-MD53SS steel screw, tensile capacity of single screw

As we understand, the tensile forces stated in Annex 10 are for the entire system which includes the bracket and two screws. Please correct us if we are wrong. What we are after is the tensile capacity for a single screw as we won’t be installing the bracket in our system. Therefore, we cannot use the stated capacity for our design calculations.

Hello Michael,

Thank you for reaching out to Hilti.

S-MD53SS is either used for metal to metal connections or metal to timber connections. Hence, the values which we have in the approval document are valid for those connections only. On Annex 10, the data is based on component 1 as the Hilti brackets (as per Annex 7,8 or 9) and component 2 could be aluminium (tI ≥ 4 mm) or steel (tI ≥ 2.5 mm). However, if you are not using brackets, we also have data for general profile to profile connections on Annex 25 and 31.

Lastly, the capacities mentioned on Annex 10, 25 and 31 are for single screws and not for the entire connection. Please look at the highlighted information in the attached images.

If you still have any further questions, please reach out to our Engineering Support >> here.

Kind Regards,
