Mr Charlie Wang

To stop smoke spreading to different levels, smoke seal between facade panels and slab edge is always required. Is the smoke seal to be 100% stopping smoke or certain leakage is allowed? Thank you.

Hi Charlie,

Thank you for your question,

For Edge of Slab seals, it is often referred to as the Leakage Rating. Keep in mind no arrangement including UL / ASTM can provide a 100% smoke free seal.

These are not measured in any percentage. The L Rating in UL Standards is measured as follows (highlighted)

ASTM E 2307 – which is for façade – has no criteria for L Rating – it is derived from ASTM E 1966 (for standard joints). The main thing to observe is that in Façade Firestop Testing that F Rating/ Integrity Rating is most important.

Australian Standards currently do not cover edge of slab seals however we have a lot of experience and data to lean on should you have further queries.
