Chemset Anchors Below Minimum Embedment

Chemset Anchors Below Minimum Embedment

The design manual gives minimum embedment depth of 70, 80 and 90mm for M12, M16, M20 anchor bolts (using HIT-RE 500 V4 with HAS-U 5.8 bolts), and a minimum base thickness of hmin 30mm.

In a lightly loaded application, can an M16 or M20 bolt be installed in a 100mm thick slab with 70mm embedment depth? And is there any guidance on the design capacity (e.g. would it perform at least as well as an M12 at minimum depth for example).

Hello Daniel,

Thank you for reaching out to Hilti.

The values for minimum embedment depth that you see in the ETA approval document are based on extensive testing done by European testing approval body. For effective embedment depths lower than that, the engineer on the project would need to consider using engineering judgment or on-site testing evaluation (resistance testing) to account for potential variability in strength performance.

If you’d like to discuss your case in more detail, please reach out to our engineering team >> here.
