Blocking thro holes for chemical anchors
  1. Can I use expanding foam to fill the void at the bottom of a hole in the slab to prevent the chemical mix from falling though...the slab is only 100mm thick and I need to install 80mm anchors.

Hi Matt,

Thank you for contacting Hilti.

Our chemical anchors have been tested with specific thicknesses for concrete members, which would depend on the size of the anchor used. Basing this on Hilti RE 500 V4, for example, you would require:

  • Embedment depth + 30mm (for anchor sizes M8 to M12)
  • Embedment depth + 2 * hole diameter (for sizes M16 to M30)

The above can be found under Table B1 on page 14 of ETA 20/0541, which can be accessed through THIS LINK.

It seems that you don't have enough concrete thickness based on what you provided above.

Also, our anchors were tested and approved for drilled holes into concrete, and not through holes. The decision to use Hilti anchors with through holes would be based on your judgement on your application at hand.

I hope this helps.

Best regards,
Ask Hilti Team.
