4 x HY270 anchor for hollow brickwork doesn't work for 5 kN shear

Hi,

I've been trying to get a fixing to hollow brickwork to work for only 5kN shear force. It's for a mullion connecting to 140thk hollow concrete brickwork to prevent some lateral movement.

I used HY270 chemanchor with sieve sleeve with 85mm length insert; setup with hollow normal weight concrete brick (200 x 200 x 500 as the minimum size) with 10MPa brick strength and M10-M20 joint strength as the max strength I can use. I end up using 4 anchors but HILTI PROFIS ENGINEERING is still failing for 170+% brick edge failure.

From an old catalogue, an HY20 +M12 will provide 3kN capacity in shear, so I'd assume 2 HY270 anchors would work. But 4 anchors still couldn't work which was out of our expectation. I've spoke to Kanan just after lunch, but he's out of the office. It would be much appreciated if you would please help looking into this issue.

Please feel free to call me on 0405 682 312 for further discussion.

Thanks,
Ola Yi

Hi Lisa,

Thank you very much for contacting Hilti.

Unfortunately we are not able to comment on the capacity of products that are not in our portfolio anymore as the components might change from product to product and therefore the capacities informed in outdated catalogues cannot be considered.

By checking in Profis Engineering, the minimum thickness of the wall we can consider is 240mm. When considering other details provided, we can simulate for the shear load requirement of 5kN. The thickness of the wall is considered 240mm and the spacing of 100mm between the anchors. The base material is HOLLOW LIGHT WEIGHT CONCRETE BRICKWORK. We have considered the minimum diameter of M8.

Please refer to the attached screen shots and reach out to our Technical Advice Services team >> here.

I hope this helps.

Kind regards,
