Anchoring into core-filled reinforced blockwork

Anchoring into core-filled reinforced blockwork

Hi,

I am looking for some design guidance on determining the capacity for chemical anchoring into core-filled blockwork.
I understand a suitable product for this application would be the HY270 anchor. The technical data sheet appears to only provide information on anchoring into hollow or solid brick. I also came across a couple of data sheets (ESR-4143 and Technical Bulletin HIT-HY 270 Technical Data for Masonry Construction, dated to 2018) that provide test values but to American Standards.

Is there a recommended design approach that can be adopted to reflect Australian Standards in the PROFIS software for this application, or equivalent test data similar to the ASTM / ESR-4143 data sheets that can be relied upon?

Thank you

Hello Kevin,

Thanks for reaching out to Hilti.

Currently, the design provision for fastenings in masonry is not covered in AS 5216. Hence, we rely upon the technical note given by Australian Engineered Fasteners and Anchor Council (AEFAC) named “TN – 09 Selection and Installation of fasteners in Masonry”. You can find it here >> link.

In Clause 4, it mentions that for chemical fasteners, EAD 330076 may be used for the prequalification of fasteners for use in masonry. For the prequalified fasteners, EOTA TR 054 may be used for the design of chemical fasteners in masonry. Hilti HY 270 is an ETA approved product which has a certification that is awarded by EOTA (European Organisation for Technical Assessment) that it has been rigorously tested and independently assessed to satisfy the requirements of EADs and demonstrated to be fit for its intended purposes.

Now, coming to part of designing in Profis Engineering – given that you have a core filled brickwork, you can design your connection as per TR 054 selecting the nearest hollow core brick in Profis. Although it will be a more conservative design but that will represent the best case in this scenario as you will require a HIT – SC sleeve for the installation purpose in core filled brick work. Check this video for installation of adhesive anchor into hollow brick >> link.

If you require further assistance in designing your connection point, please reach out to our Engineering team here >> link.

Hope this helps.

Kind Regards,

Hello Kevin, Although the core will be filled with mortar into the brick work, there may be some minor gaps between the core and the brick. In such cases, where there is uncertainty we would suggest using the sleeves for uniform installation. However, we leave the final decision up to the discretion of the project design engineer. Kind Regards, Ask Hilti Team

Hi, thank you for your response. Just wanting to clarify the last point regarding the use of the HIT-SC sleeve; In practice, will this sleeve need to be installed regardless of whether the blockwork is hollow or fully core-filled?
