Limits on Edge Distance

Limits on Edge Distance

Hello,
I try to understand and find a solution for a permanent bracket fixing to existing concrete using anchors. You can see attached there is only limited concrete available and the applied ULS and sus similar load and direction is known.

  1. Could you advise, for the edge distance to the vertical anchors, is there a limitation on the edge distance for this instance?
  2. That the theory introduced in Anchor101 still applicable to any edge distance?
  3. Similarly, relationship for the limitation of the embedment due to the limited edge distance in this instance?
  4. If applicable, the recommended anchor types and edge capacity per anchor? (e.g. FEA model only shows two Vertical anchors is effective).

Thank you
Kind Regards

Hi Kate,

Thanks for posting your question.

Minimum edge distance is determined by the test, which is available in relevant product ETA document and it's applicable in each direction. Larger the diameter of the anchor, greater will be the minimum edge distance you have to maintain. Your case is fairly simple and you can use free Hilti software (Profis Engineering) to design it. The software is fully compatible with the local code and beyond, and works based on the first principle you learnt in Anchor 101 webinar.

I did a quick calculation, and Hilti HAS-U 5.8 HDG M16 anchor embedded 80mm using Hilti RE500V3 adhesive + Hilti filling washer seems adequate for your load. Please note that M16 HAS-U anchor with RE500V3 requires at least 50mm edge distance.

Anchoring on the vertical kerb is not necessary since the load requirement is fulfilled by the anchors on the slab alone.

The ETA approval is integrated into the software too, but you can get it in our homepage too, direct link for RE500V3: Click
